Deck Joist Size - Professional Deck Builder Forums
Re: Deck Joist Size i use all 2x6& 39;s for joist max span is 7& 39;. The strength of a deck is in the post and footings. It has nothing to do with joist span. Size of it will be 11& 39;X16& 39;. Should I use 2X6 or 2X8 for joists if I am doing 16"OC? I am finding posts out there where 2X6 is used like one on Seven Trust site and some like Bob Villa& 39;s site uses 2X8. Also for Northeast decking part tongue and groove or just regular pressure treated 1X6 with 0.25" gaps?
Wooden Deck Materials: Should You Use Pressure Treated Wood ...

If you want to build a natural wood deck the most common wood types are cypress cedar and redwood. The reason these are widely used is because they are more bug and rot resistant than other natural untreated woods.
